Herd & Kragel hit walk-offs as Pima baseball sweeps South Mountain

The Pima Community College baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep on Saturday against Phoenix jSouth Mountain at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.

The No. 16 Aztecs (17-5, 5-3 in ACCAC) secured the wins on walk-offs, which included a run-rule victory.

Sophomore Brant Kragel finished the day 4 for 8 with six RBIs, three runs and a home run.

Sophomore Dom Felix (Canyon del Oro) was 6 for 7 with three RBIs and four runs.

Sophomore Garrett Hicks and Maclain Roberts got the wins on the mound.

·Game 1: (16) Pima 8, South Mountain 7

The Aztecs took a 7-0 lead after the first three innings and thwarted the Cougars’ attempt to complete the comeback as sophomore Caleb Herd (Cienega) hit a walk-off RBI single to score pinch-runner Leon Cereceres with two outs in the 7th inning.

The Aztecs scored three runs in the 1st inning as sophomore David Shackelford put the Aztecs on the board with an RBI single and Kragel followed with a two-run home run.

Felix made it 4-0 with a lead-off home run in the 2nd inning and continued his stellar hitting in the 3rd inning with a two-run RBI single to bring in Shackelford and Kragel to make it 7-0.

The Cougars tied it with three runs in the 5th inning and four runs in the 6th.

Shackelford hit an RBI double in the 3rd inning and finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Felix went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run. Kragel was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs while Herd went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Hicks picked up the win after pitching the final two innings in relief, giving up one run (earned) on two hits with two strikeouts.

Game 2: (16) Pima 16, South Mountain 5 (7 innings)

After giving up five runs in the top of the 7th inning, the Aztecs countered with five runs of their own as Kragel hit a walk-off two-run RBI single to score sophomores Nick Arias (Tucson) and Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro). Arias hit an RBI single to plate Felix and Madsen hit a two-run RBI single to bring in freshman Ray Jesse and sophomore Antonio Avila in the previous at-bats.

Sophomore Eljiah Reeves (Marana) hit a three-run homer in the 2nd inning to make it 4-0 while Arias hit an RBI triple as part of Pima five-run inning to make it 6-0.

Kragel hit RBI singles in the 1st and 4th innings as he finished 3 for 5 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Felix was 4 for 4 with three runs and four doubles. Arias went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs.

Reeves was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs. Avila went 2 for 3 with three runs and two walks while Jesse finished 1 for 3 with two runs and a walk.

Roberts was the winning pitcher after he pitched five scoreless innings, giving up three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs hit the road on Tuesday when they play an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Paradise Valley Community College. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
