Nogales head coach OJ Favela reached 400 career victories on March 19 when the Apaches defeated Casa Grande 6-1. He picked up his 300th career victory almost exactly five years earlier so expect No. 500 to come before this decade is over.
Favela took the Nogales job in 2006 after spending some time as an assistant at Rio Rico and Salpointe under former head coach Kent Winslow. His grandfather, Arnold “Chapo” Riesgo, was a catcher for the University of Arizona. He has two state championships (2017 and 2018) to go along with three runner-up finishes (2014, 2019 and 2022).
Only 50 years young, Favela could reach a few more milestones before he’s done. He told Jonathan Clark of the Nogales International, “I’ll do it as long as I feel I can have an impact on the kids and reach them.”
