Thornydale went 3-0 to capture the District 5 Little League Softball championship Saturday evening at the Arthur Pack Complex near Marana. Thornydale beat Continental Ranch 9-6 in the championship to advance to the state tournament slated for the Verde Valley area beginning on July 5. Copper Hills and Randolph will play in a best-of-three series starting on June 27 to represent District 12 at the state tournament and Sierra Vista, Willcox and Bisbee are playing to be the District 8 representative.
Thornydale beat Tucson Mountain 14-2 on Tuesday and Canyon View 12-2 on Thursday to set up the championship final with Continental Ranch on Saturday. Continental Ranch lost to Canyon View 3-2 on Tuesday, beat Tucson Mountain 13-11 on Thursday in the elimination bracket before knocking Canyon View out 3-2 on Friday.
Thornydale scored a run in the top of the first after Sophia Silverstein doubled with two outs and Kenzie Scott knocked her in but Continental Ranch responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, paced by a two-RBI double from Brooklyn James. Scott took the circle for Thornydale and she collected 13 strikeouts the rest of the way, only giving up a run in the third inning on a hit from Cateleya Kirkland and an RBI from Lilah McHughes. At one point, Scott struck out seven batters in a row.

Meanwhile, Thornydale slowly chipped away with two runs in the second, with Tristyn Pogue coming up with two RBI, three runs in the third with an RBI from Scott, two runs in the fourth, on an RBI triple from Pogue and a sacrifice bunt RBI from Gabby Martinez and a final run in the fifth on a double from Sophia Calderon and another RBI from Scott. Scott finished 3-3 with three RBI and Pogue finished 2-2 with a triple and three RBI.
For Continental Ranch, McHughes finished 2-3 with an RBI and Presley Pfau took the circle for Continental Ranch and she finished with 12 strikeouts.
