Tracking former Southern Arizona & Arizona Wildcats baseball players in pros (8/10)

NOTE: This is a compilation of stats involving players from Southern Arizona and the Arizona Wildcats’ program in MLB-sanctioned leagues (MLB and minor leagues). The list does not include players in foreign leagues or independent leagues in the U.S.

Cal Stevenson will be the ninth former Arizona player to play in the major leagues this season when he joins the Philadelphia Phillies. The other former Wildcats who have played in big-league games this season are Bobby Dalbec and Rob Refsnyder of the Boston Red Sox, Kevin Newman and Kevin Ginkel of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cesar Salazar of the Houston Astros, Austin Wells of the New York Yankees, Tylor Megill of the New York Mets and Andrew Nardi of the Miami Marlins.

Two moves made by the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday impacted a couple of players from Southern Arizona who were with Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Pa.). The Phillies selected former Arizona outfielder Cal Stevenson to its 40-man spot, thereby forcing Buena High School graduate Darick Hall, a first baseman, out of his 40-man spot, designating him for assignment. Stevenson will join the Phillies to replace outfielder Austin Hays, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a hamstring pull.

Stevenson, 27, was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants in May of last year but then was outrighted off the Phillies’ roster the following month. He’s spent all of this year putting up great numbers at the Triple-A level. In 91 games for the IronPigs, he’s hit seven home runs and drawn walks at a 16.4 percent clip while limiting his strikeouts to a 16.7 percent strikeout rate. He is batting .307 with 21 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 39 RBIs and 27 stolen bases while lining up at all three outfield spots.

Stevenson has played 29 games in the major leagues with the Giants (six games last season) and Oakland Athletics (23 in 2022), but he hit just .145 (10 of 69) in those games. He still has one option remaining and won’t be able to get to one year of service time this season, which means the Phillies can retain him at minimal cost.

Hall played 59 games with the Phillies in the previous two seasons but has spent this entire season in Triple-A. He has shown power with 12 home runs but has struggled at times at the plate, batting .248. He is in his final option year, so he will be out of options in 2025. He also has Bryce Harper (first base) and Kyle Schwarber (designated hitter) in front of him at Philadelphia.

Within seven days (by Friday), Hall can be placed on outright or unconditional release waivers.

If he is claimed off waivers by another club, he is immediately added to that team’s 40-man roster, at which point he can be optioned to the minor leagues or assigned to his new team’s 26-man roster.

If he clears outright waivers, he may be assigned outright to the minor leagues or released by the Phillies.
