As Catalina Foothills welcomed Buena on Friday, the Falcons were looking to secure their first win of the season while the Colts were looking to silence the home crowd and improve to 3-0.
Buena achieved its goal with a 49-7 victory in the non-region game.
Catalina Foothills was able to strike first on the first possession of the game with a 36-yard touchdown pass from senior Jacob Ford to sophomore Khalil Azzam.
Buena’s rushing attack and defense took over from there.
The Colts scored seven touchdowns, including five rushing and two passing.
Quarterback Nash Moore, a senior, was able to find wide receivers Jayden Thomas, a junior who is coach Joseph Thomas’ son, and Latavis “T.J.” Walker, another junior, while the five rushing touchdowns were scored by junior Michael Lujan and senior Andres Bonilla.
Lujan scored three touchdowns and Bonilla two.
“I got to give credit to all my offensive linemen,” Lujan said. “Sure, I’d break one or two tackles, but I couldn’t even get that place if the hole wasn’t even open.”
Joseph Thomas said that during Buena’s practices during the week that he wanted his team to work on the run game and to be more physical.
“We just wanted to be physical,” he said. “In order to work on being physical, you got to run the ball. That’s what a physical football game is.”
Buena’s defense, along with just giving up the touchdown on the opening drive of the game, made some big plays.
It had a fumble recovery and two interceptions by senior Charlie Price and sophomore Tariq Howard.
“To only give up seven points, that’s not bad at all, but I wanted to not give up any points at all,” the head coach said, adding that he liked how aggressive the Colts played overall.
Buena will host Tucson High (2-1) while Catalina Foothills will remain at home to take on Pusch Ridge (2-1) on Friday night. Both games start at 7.
