Sunnyside wrestling standout Sergio Vega flips commitment from Cornell to Oklahoma State



Sunnyside senior Sergio Vega, one of the most accomplished wrestlers to ever compete in Southern Arizona, announced via Instagram on Saturday that he has flipped his commitment from Cornell to Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys traditionally have been highly successful in wrestling with 34 team national titles and 143 individual national champions.

The program also recently attracted Sunyside legend Roman Bravo-Young to the Oklahoma State Regional Training Center, where he will continue to train in the sport after competing in the Paris Olympics with Mexico.

Vega, a 4.0-GPA student, is coming off winning the Super 32 Challenge championship at 138 pounds last week Greensboro, N.C.

It was one of his many achievements this year that includes earning his third straight state championship with Sunnyside in February, winning the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Nationals title in April, capturing USA Wrestling’s Fargo (N.D.) Junior Freestyle National Championships in July and defeating Drew Gorman, a Virginia Tech commit, in the Who’s Number One folkstyle event in September.
