6A FLAG FOOTBALL
MARANA NO. 3 IN 6A FLAG FOOTBALL BRACKET, SUNNYSIDE IN AT NO. 15 IN FIRST YEAR
No. 3 Marana (12-1) and No. 15 Sunnyside (10-4) will represent Southern Arizona in the 6A flag football bracket that starts Wednesday at 6 p.m.
- Marana will host No. 14 Phoenix Desert Vista (7-6). The Tigers and standout Malaysia Roebuck will look to improve on last year’s quarterfinal appearance. Marana just won at Desert Vista 24-6 on Wednesday.
- Sunnyside won three straight games to end the regular season, including impressive victories on the road against Nogales and Xavier Prep to clinch a playoff spot in its first season. The Blue Devils are led by one of the best players in Southern Arizona — junior QB Anyssa Lerma, daughter of coach Alfredo Lerma. The Blue Devils will open bracket play at No. 2 Basha (11-1).

NO. 7 BUENA, NO. 8 NOGALES & NO. 15 DESERT VIEW IN STATE PLAYOFFS IN FIRST YEAR OF FLAG FOOTBALL
First round games Wednesday at 6 p.m.:
- No. 12 Tempe McClintock (5-7) at No. 5 Casa Grande (11-2) … The Cougars went 7-0 in the 5A Southern.
- No. 10 Lake Havasu (8-4) at No. 7 Buena (11-3) … Buena led by freshman standout Deztany Toyota-Villalobos.
- No. 9 Goodyear Desert Edge (8-4) at No. 8 Nogales (9-3) … Nogales senior sensation Johanna Simpson leading the Apaches.
- No. 15 Desert View (5-6) at No. 2 Waddell Canyon View (11-1) … Jaguars get in after winning three of their last four games.
- No. 16 Mountain View (5-8) at No. 1 Phoenix Mountain Pointe (12-0) … Mountain Lions make the state playoffs for the second time in as many years of their existence.
