Buena senior running back Andres Bonilla went to more than 1,000 yards rushing this season and built on his school record of more than 4,000 in his career with Friday’s 225-yard performance on 18 carries in the Colts’ 32-15 win over Cienega at Sierra Vista.
Bonilla is at 1,199 yards rushing on 116 carries with 13 touchdowns this season for Buena, which is 8-2 and the No. 3 seed in the 5A state playoffs that start Friday at 7 p.m. with a home game against No. 14 Casa Grande.
He is now with 4,065 yards on 528 yards with 40 touchdowns in his career in which he has played on the varsity team all four years.
Jamal Womble, who went on to play at North Carolina and Northern Illinois, had the previous school record of 3,769 yards on 446 carries with 46 touchdowns in three years from 2006 to 2008.
For Bonilla’s performance against Cienega, which was the third time he has surpassed 200 rushing yards in a game in his career, he is the Week 12 APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Player of the Week.
He also rushed for a touchdown in the win over Cienega.
Bonilla and Buena coach Joe Thomas will each receive a banner honoring the player of the week selection.
