Pima women earn eighth straight win ahead of showdown with rival Mesa

The No. 10 Pima Community College women’s basketball team picked up its eighth straight victory on Saturday after beating Glendale 59-40 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

Next up Wednesday is a rematch with No. 5 Mesa, a longtime rival of the Aztecs, at 5:30 p.m. at the West Campus Gym. Mesa beat Pima 74-57 in Mesa on Dec. 11.

The Aztecs (17-3, 9-1 in ACCAC) beat Glendale (6-11, 4-5) on Saturday behind a 14-5 run in the third quarter and a 12-5 run in the fourth quarter.

They scored the final two points of the first quarter and carried the momentum into the second quarter turning it into an 11-0 run to take their first double-digit lead at 24-13.

Despite the run, the Aztecs scored just nine points in the second quarter and took a 24-16 lead at halftime. The Gauchos were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the second quarter and scored just three points.

Freshman Kiley Sours-Miller (formerly of Arizona State) was difficult to contain in the second half as she finished with her ninth double-double of the season with 20 points and 14 rebounds. She was 10 for 16 from the field and had three blocks and two assists.

Sophomore Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino) scored eight of her 12 points in the second half as she grabbed five rebounds and had two assists.

Freshman Lucy Land finished with nine points off the bench as she shot 4 for 8 from the field and hit Pima’s only 3-pointer of the game. The Aztecs were 1 for 10 from beyond the arc for the game.

Sophomore Rori Hoffmeyer contributed with seven points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Freshman Kennedi Niemann posted seven points to go with four rebounds and four assists.
