Walden Grove and Salpointe, Southern Arizona programs that have played each other in the last two 4A state championship matches, will play a first-round game at Salpointe at Tuesday in the first girls soccer Open State Championship that features the highest rated teams in 4A through 6A.
The No. 17 Red Wolves (10-1-1) will play the No. 16 Lancers (8-2-2) at 6 p.m.
Walden Grove won the 4A state championship over Salpointe last season, ending the Lancers’ three-year string of titles. Two years ago, the Lancers topped the Red Wolves for the title.
The teams played to a scoreless draw on Jan. 27 at Salpointe.
If either Salpointe or Walden Grove do not advance past the first two rounds of the Open State Championship, they will shift to the 4A state bracket.
