Palo Verde lone Southern Arizona team in first Copper State Championship

Palo Verde, 20-4 overall with a 3A South title at 8-1, is the only team from Southern Arizona in the first Cooper State Championships boys basketball tournament that features the top 16 teams from 1A to 3A.

The Titans, the No. 14 seed, will play at No. 3 Paradise Valley Phoenix Country Day (17-2) at 7 p.m. in a first-round game Wednesday.

If Palo Verde wins both early rounds, it will continue in the Copper State Championships. If it loses in either the first round or second round, it will shift to the 3A state tournament.

3A HOOPS BRACKET

No. 11 Sabino and No. 14 Pusch Ridge are in the 3A state tournament.

Both will be in pool play Friday at 7 p.m. with the winners advancing to the bracket along with teams that lose in the first two rounds of the Copper State Championships.

Sabino (19-4) will host No. 24 ALA-West Foothills (8-15) and Pusch Ridge (14-11) will host Chandler Seton Catholic (14-14).

2A PLAY-IN

No. 12 Desert Christian (26-3) will play in a 2A state championship tournament play-in game Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting No. 19 Phoenix Madison Highland (13-6).
