No. 2 Pima men keep rolling, now 25-0 overall and 13-0 in ACCAC

The second-ranked Pima Community College men’s basketball team used a first half run to go up by double digits and dominated the second half on Saturday in a 98-62 win over Phoenix College at the Aztec West Gym.

The Aztecs are 25-0 overall and 13-0 in the ACCAC.

Top-ranked North Central Missouri is 24-0 overall.

Pima honored at halftime Saturday coach Brian Peabody for achieving his 700th career victory at Scottsdale on Wednesday. He is now 701-255 in 32 years as a head coach at Green Fields, St. Gregory, Salpointe, Ironwood Ridge and Pima.

With the score tied at 15 on Saturday, the Aztecs went on a 13-0 run and held the Bears (11-14, 3-10) scoreless for more than four minutes to go up 28-15.

The Aztecs took a 43-30 lead at halftime.

The Bears scored the first points of the second half, but the Aztecs countered with a 9-0 run that was capped by freshman Mason Hunt’s 3-point play.

The Aztecs went up 60-38 and helped put the game away by outscoring the Bears 28-8 during a stretch to make it 88-46. The Aztecs went on to outscore Phoenix College 55-32 in the second half.

Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales made 7 for 10 shots from the field, scoring a team-high 19 points to go with five assists and three steals.

Hunt had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Sophomore Gabe Oldham fell short of a double-double as he also posted 15 points after going 6 for 10 from the field. He snatched nine rebounds and had two assists.

Sophomores Max Majerle and Kota Benson each contributed with nine points while freshman Isaac Johnson added eight points, four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Kaelum Brown had seven points, five rebounds and two assists. He was 3 for 3 from the field.

The Aztecs will next play at Chandler-Gilbert (15-10, 8-5) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Pima is 2-0 against Chandler-Gilbert this season, including a 78-56 win on Nov. 23 at Chandler-Gilbert.
