Cienega held on to beat Empire 6-5 at the Lancer Baseball Classic on Tuesday at the Reid Park Annex. Cienega (2-1) went up 4-1 after two innings and 6-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth when Empire (3-4) scored four runs and left the bases loaded in the 6-5 loss.
Zak Vasquez threw five innings for the Bobcats with eight strikeouts and Carlos Davila threw one inning in relief. Kaden Mercer got the start for the Ravens and Kaleb Hendrix threw the last three innings.
Nano Lopez tripled in Tristan Cruz to put the Bobcats up 1-0 in the first inning. Liam Schmidt singled in Davila with one out in the second and then Andrew Romo brought in Jake Riesgo and Schmidt to make it 4-0. Travis Linkous brought in Austin Mittness to make it 4-1 after two but AB Wach picked up an RBI to score Lopez in the top of the third to get the run back.
Schmidt tripled in Cruz to make it 6-1 in the top of the sixth but the Ravens came alive in the bottom half of the inning, The Ravens worked the bases loaded with one out on a single from Zackary Breinlinger, an error and a hit-by-pitch and Chance Bird singled, scoring Mittness and Brady Carey to make it 6-3. Another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and Adam Armstrong walked to make it 6-4. Mercer brought in Bird to make it 6-5 but Davila picked up a strikeout with the bases loaded for the second out and then a ground out to preserve the win.
Lopez went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, Schmidt went 2-3 with a triple and two RBI, Romo went 1-4 with two RBI, Davila went 1-2, Wach went 1-3 with an RBI and Cruz went 1-1 for Cienega. Bird went 1-3 with two RBI for Empire, Armstrong went 1-3 with an RBI, Mercer went 1-2 with an RBI, Breinlinger went 1-3 and Linkous went 1-2 with an RBI.
