Arizona was finally able to take out its frustration against in-state nemesis Grand Canyon, ending a four-game losing streak to the Antelopes that included a loss in last year’s NCAA regional at Hi Corbett Field.
The Arizona (26-10) lineup came to life Tuesday night at Hi Corbett in a 14-4 run-rule victory over Grand Canyon (22-14).
Salpointe graduate Mason White went 3 for 5 as one of four Wildcats had finished with multiple hits.
Ironwood Ridge alum Andrew Cain went 2 for 2 (both triples), Adonys Guzman was 2 for 5 and Maddox Mihalakis was 3 for 4. White, Cain, Guzman and Mihalakis combined to drive in five runs.
Cain became the first Wildcat since Donta‘ Williams in 2019 to record two triples in a single game.
Aaron Walton and Garen Caulfield also had multiple RBI performances.
Starting pitcher Raul Garayzar worked 3 1/3 innings and did not allow a hit or an earned run, though he did not factor into the decision.
Reliever Matthew Martinez (2-0) earned the win following 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Right-hander Julian Tonghini also posted a scoreless relief outing in the seventh.
Caulfield delivered the decisive blow, a sac fly to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning that activated the run-rule in walk-off fashion.
Arizona will fly to Provo, Utah, on Wednesday to start its three-game series at BYU on Thursday. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m. The three-game series will be on ESPN+.
