Arizona coach Becky Burke has landed her third transfer, second from outside the Buffalo program, with the addition of Memphis 5-10 guard/forward Tanyuel Welch, according to a social media post by Talia Goodman of On3.com.
Welch, who hails from Indianapolis, has two years of eligibility remaining, averaged 10.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season for the Tigers.
She was selected to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team in 2022-23.
The high school she attended in Indianapolis — North Central — is the same one that produced legendary Arizona point guard Jason Gardner, now an assistant with the men’s program. He was honored as Mr. Basketball in the state in 1998-99 while playing at North Central.
Welch was a 2021-22 finalist for the Miss Indiana Basketball honor. She was an all-state first-team selection as a senior.
The passing of her father Miguel Welch from cancer in 2021, while she attended North Central, was a heartfelt story in Indianapolis.
Tanyuel Welch is the fourth known member of Burke’s first team at Arizona.
