Less than a day after redshirt freshman Kamryn Kitchen entered the transfer portal with a “do not contact” tag, she posted on social media Wednesday she he is headed to Arizona to play for new coach Becky Burke.
Kitchen, a 5-foot-9 guard from Charlotte, N.C., redshirted in her only year with Virginia this season after reclassifying to begin her academics a year ahead of schedule with the Cavaliers.
She originally was to graduate from Independence High School at Charlotte this school year and is rated by ESPN’s HoopGurlz as the No. 57 prospect in the Class of 2025.
She told 247Sports.com last July that she enrolled at Virginia a year early because of circumstances involving the program at Independence.
“They (Virginia) first gave me the opportunity three months ago and they told me that if I’m ready I can play and if I’m not I can redshirt,” Kitchen told 247Sports. “With my high school coach leaving with pretty much the whole staff it was kind of tough. I thought coming this year was the best opportunity to get a head start on my academics and come in as a true freshman next year and ahead of the game and a lot stronger.”
In her three seasons at Independence, she set the school record for 3-pointers made with 200.
As an AAU player, she played for Team Curry. She was one of 14 shooters nationwide who received an invitation to Steph Curry’s shooting camp in the summer of 2023.
Kitchen is the fourth player in the last week to announce a transfer to Arizona, and the third outside of the Buffalo program who was recruited by Burke to come to Tucson.
Noelani Cornfield announced via social media Friday — the same day Burke met the local media for the first time — that she is following Burke from Buffalo to Arizona.
Horizon League Player of the Year Mickayla Perdue of Cleveland State announced Tuesday she is transferring to Arizona for her final year of college hoops.
Earlier Wednesday, the transfer of Memphis 5-10 guard/forward Tanyuel Welch to Arizona was reported by Talia Goodman of On3.com.
Montaya Dew is the only holdover from Adia Barnes‘ roster. Barnes left Arizona for SMU last week.
