Arizona adds Kansas transfer forward Freddie Wallace

Becky Burke added her fifth transfer and Arizona announced the official hire of assistant James Ewing on Friday, a week after Burke met the local media for the first time and promised excitement for the program.

Former Kansas player Freddie Wallace, a 6-foot-2 junior from Lincoln, Neb., is Burke’s first transfer taller than 6-foot.

Wallace did not play with the Jayhawks this season because of medical reasons after transferring from Butler (Kan.) Community College.

She was a two-time junior college All-American, earning All-America second-team honors in 2023-24 after garnering a third-team selection as a freshman.

She is Butler’s career scoring leader, totaling 1,138 points. As a sophomore, she averaged 18.4 points per game, scoring 20 or more points in 14 games while helping Butler to a berth in the Region VI title game. She also averaged 6.8 rebounds per game and shot 47.2 percent from the field.

Ewing, who has worked alongside Burke since 2023, brings a strong background in player development, recruiting, and post play instruction to Arizona’s program.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have James here in Tucson with me,” said Burke in a press release. “He is a high-level recruiter, high character man, and brings exceptional energy and passion for the game. James was a large part of the success we had at Buffalo and I am so excited for us to continue that success together here at Arizona.”

Ewing arrives in Tucson after two seasons on Burke’s staff at Buffalo, where he played a key role in back-to-back postseason runs. During the 2024-25 season, Ewing helped lead the Bulls to a program-record 30 wins and a WNIT Championship. In his first season with the Bulls, the team earned 19 wins, reached the MAC Championship game, and made a postseason WNIT appearance. Buffalo also posted a seven-win improvement in league play — the highest in the MAC — as Ewing helped mentor standout post player Alexis Davis, the team’s leading rebounder.

The announcement of the official hire of Ewing follows Thursday’s development that Tennessee legend Michelle Marciniak was hired by Arizona to be the program’s general manager.
