Pima Roundup: Eighth-ranked softball team on 12-game winning streak

The No. 8 Pima Community College softball team swept a doubleheader at Scottsdale on Saturday to increase its winning streak to 12 games.

Pima (45-5, 33-5 in ACCAC) also snapped a five-game winning streak for Scottsdale (23-16, 18-16).(23-16,

Sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega) finished the day 3 for 8 with two RBIs and three runs while freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson) hit her 20th home run of the season and closed out the day going 3 for 7 with an RBI and three runs.

Sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo) was 4 for 6 with two RBIs. Sophomore Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde) and freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo) combined to throw 14 innings, giving up two earned runs with 19 strikeouts.

(8) Pima 4, Scottsdale 1: Thompson (11-0) pitched a complete game, giving up one run on seven hits with 11 strikeouts and four walks on 132 pitches.

The Pima offense provided enough support in the fourth inning with two runs and scored twice more in the sixth.

The Aztecs got their first hit of the game when sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside) led off with a single in the fourth inning. Nunez hit a single to put two runners on base with one out. Noriega drove an RBI single to plate Rivera and freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson) hit a groundout, but scored Nunez to put the Aztecs up 2-0.

Noriega and Lopez came through again in the sixth inning with back-to-back RBI singles. Marx and pinch runner Uriah Burrell (Catalina Foothills) scored, respectively.

Noriega finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Lopez went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Rivera and Marx each went 1 for 4 with a run and Nunez finished 1 for 3 with a run.

·Game 2: (8) Pima 7, Scottsdale 2: Camacho threw a complete game, giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks on 98 pitches.

The Aztecs fell behind early but scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead for good. They tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Camacho scored on an error to tie the game at 1. Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View) put the Aztecs ahead with an RBI single to score freshman Amerika LopezBedoy (Sunnyside). Marx followed with a two-run home run to center field and Nunez belted her solo homer to right field, making it 5-1.

Marx and Nunez started off the seventh inning with two straight singles. Freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View) drove in Marx with her RBI single. Rivera hit a sacrifice-fly to bring in Nunez.

Marx went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs while Nunez finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs. Martin was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run and Rivera went 1 for 4 with an RBI. Camacho (6-3) helped her own cause by going 2 for 4 with a run. Noriega was 2 for 3.

The Aztecs will next play at Chandler-Gilbert on Tuesday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.

NO. 9 BASEBALL TEAM WINS AT PHOENIX COLLEGE

The No. 9 Pima baseball team (42-11, 26-11 in ACCAC) found its offense in the later innings on Saturday when it played an ACCAC game at Phoenix College (18-31, 13-23).

The Aztecs fell behind in the third inning but rallied in the sixth and seventh innings in their 6-3 win over the Bears.

The Bears took a 2-0 with runs in the third inning.

The Aztecs managed just one hit in the first five innings.

Freshman Jackson Glueck had a lead-off walk in the sixth inning and fellow freshman Zach Plasschaert, formerly of Arizona, doubled to put two runners on base. Freshman Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) tied the game with one swing as he drove an RBI single to left field bringing around Glueck and Plasschaert.

The Aztecs took the lead in the seventh inning when sophomore Collin Senior hit an RBI single to score sophomore Nolan Ganter, who drew a one-out walk. Plasschaert followed with a three-run home run to left field on the first pitch he saw, scoring Glueck and Senior to make it 6-2.

Plasschaert hit a single in the fourth inning and fell a triple short of the cycle as he went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs. Jones finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Glueck was 1 for 4 with two runs and Senior went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Freshman Brady Hall picked up the win in relief as he pitched two innings, giving up three hits with three strikeouts.

Sophomore Tsubasa Tomii recorded his fourth save after he pitched the ninth inning, giving up one hit with three strikeouts. Sophomore Lucas Casey (Canyon del Oro) started the game and pitched five innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will head back out on the road Tuesday for an ACCAC doubleheader against Glendale. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S AND MEN’S TRACK & FIELD CONCLUDE REGULAR SEASONS

The Pima men’s and women’s track & field teams closed out their regular season meet schedule on Friday when they hosted the Pima Outdoor Invitational at the West Campus Aztec Track.

The No. 7 women’s team finished the regular season with 14 national qualifying times and marks.

Sophomore Morgan Pepe (Ironwood Ridge) almost broke her own Pima record in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 3.81 meters (12 feet, 6 inches). She set the pole vault outdoor school record last season at 3.82 meters (12-6.25).

Sophomore April Necaise set an NJCAA national qualifying mark in the high jump, tying for first place with a season-high jump of 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4.25 inches).

The No. 7 men’s team closed out the regular season schedule with 16 national qualifying times/marks.

Sophomore Benjamin Morgan (Sabino) tied for first place in the hammer throw and set a national qualifying mark with a career high of 50.00 meters (164 feet, 0 inches). His previous best was 48.83 meters (160-2).

Sophomore Nasir Tucker earned first place in the long jump, setting a national qualifier with a career-best jump of 7.61 meters (24 feet, 11.75 inches). His previous best was 7.59 meters (24-11).

Sophomore Carter Huntsman improved on his national qualifier in the pole vault but also set a new career best with a vault of 4.74 meters (15 feet, 6.50 inches). His previous best was 4.72 meters (15-5.75).

The Aztecs begin playoff competition on Monday and Tuesday in the Region I Multi Championships held at Mesa.
