No. 13 Arizona defeated host San Diego State 1-0 behind Devyn Netz’s solo home run in the seventh inning on Friday in the first of two games between the Wildcats and Aztecs.

Netz (19-5) also pitched a complete game in the circle allowing three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Her performance follows Tuesday’s announcement at Hillenbrand Stadium that she is one of 12 players to earn the golden ticket to be drafted in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League this year.

It was also announced Friday that her brother Dawson Netz, a former Arizona baseball pitcher, was signed to a minor-league deal in the Chicago Cubs’ farm system.

Regan Shockey had two of Arizona’s five hits off San Diego State starter Cece Cellura (12-7). Shockey also kept the game scoreless in the third running, robbing a home run from clearing the center-field fence.

Both teams threatened but couldn’t score through six innings.

Netz’s home run, her 17th of the season, led off the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, she struck out the final two batters to secure the victory for Arizona (40-9).

Arizona will play San Diego State (29-16) on Saturday at noon.

The Wildcats will then conclude regular-season play in the Big 12 next weekend in a three-game series at Houston.

The Big 12 tournament at Oklahoma City will follow from May 7-10.
