Salpointe graduate Trey Naughton, who medically retired from football this spring at Arizona because of a back injury, will not play with the Wildcats as a long snapper as he had hoped but will remain with the program as an intern working with football general manager Gaizka Crowley.

Naughton’s mother Elizabeth Naughton announced her son’s intentions Friday via social media.

“Thank you to the amazing coaches, teammates and friends that have been part of his journey,” the elder Naughton mentioned. “Trey will forever be a Wildcat as he becomes a part of the team in this new role.”

Naughton, an Academic All-American with a 4.0 GPA while at Western Kentucky from 2022 to 2024, wants to pursue a career in sports management — his area of study while with the Hilltoppers.

He is studying Business Administration at Arizona and has a 3.8 GPA. He is on the Dean’s List and President’s List at Arizona.

Trey Naughton announced via social media April 22 that he is retiring from football because of a back injury resulting in two herniated discs sustained while he was at Western Kentucky.

He received two epidurals and underwent physical therapy to no avail.

“I’ll always be proud of my journey and even more thankful for my family, teammates and coaches who pushed me to be my best,” Naughton wrote in a social media post. “I’m excited to stay close to the game as a student assistant and keep giving my all to the team in a new way.”

Naughton is a Class of 2022 graduate at Salpointe who redshirted at Western Kentucky as a true freshman and played in all 13 games in 2023. He was an All-Conference USA honorable-mention selection, earned a spot on the All-CUSA Freshman Team, and was named a 2023 Academic All-America second-team selection by the College Sports Communicators.
