Arizona reaches 30-win plateau for 10th straight season after splitting doubleheader at Texas Tech

Arizona continues its blueblood status in college baseball.

In addition to four national championships, including one captured only 13 years ago, the Wildcats continue to perform at a high level compared to other programs.

Saturday’s split of a doubleheader at Texas Tech improved Arizona to 30-13 overall and 13-7 in the Big 12.

The program that boasts coaches Frank Sancet, Jerry Kindall, Andy Lopez, Jay Johnson and now Wildcat favorite Chip Hale has now won 30 or more games in each of the last 10 full seasons and in 61 full seasons since 1950.

The Wildcats lost to Texas Tech (14-24, 9-11) by a score of 12-3 in the first game Saturday and bounced back to win 2-1 in the second game. A doubleheader at Lubbock, Texas, was played because Friday’s series opener was postponed due to rain.

Walden Grove graduate Owen Kramkowski, the starter in the second game, was dominant for the Wildcats, posting his best road performance of the season.

The tall righty, who improved to 7-3, worked seven innings and allowed just one run on a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Closer Tony Pluto pitched a scoreless final two innings of the game for his ninth save. He allowed only one hit while striking out two with no walks.

Arizona’s runs in the second game came on a solo home run from center fielder Aaron Walton and an RBI single from second baseman Garen Caulfield, both of which came in the top of the sixth.

Designated hitter Brendan Summerhill drove in a pair of runs with a double down the line in the top of the third inning of the first game. He reportedly aggravated a hamstring injury and did not play in the second game.

Arizona and Texas Tech will play in the rubber match on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The game will be on ESPN+.
