Baseball’s Next Level hosting fall high school scout team tryouts May 17 at Reid Park Annex

Baseball’s Next Level will conduct a tryout camp at the Reid Park Baseball Complex on May 17 for its 24th high school scout-team season from August to October.

The tryouts for players in the Class of 2026, 2027 and 2028 will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a $20 fee.

Players are encouraged to bring their water. A snack will be provided.

The schedule runs every Saturday for 10 weeks from mid-August to mid-October and it will include games against seven community colleges in Arizona — Pima, Central Arizona, Cochise, Eastern Arizona, South Mountain, Yavapai and Gateway.

The team will also compete in the Colorado Rockies Invitational and Senior Arizona Fall Classic.

Baseball’s Next Level has a rich history of producing elite-level talent under founder Bryan Huie, a longtime area major-league scout.

The Southern Arizona baseball development program has produced more than 270 players who advanced to college or professional baseball.

Huie decided to end BNL’s year-round operations last October after 10-year run. He said he wants to continue running the fall high school scout team “because I want to help these young players the best I can achieve their goals in baseball and in life.”

Two former BNL players played in the major-leagues this season — Baltimore Orioles left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers of Carlsbad, N.M., and Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales of Cienega High School.

Infielder Darell Hernaiz of El Paso played with the Oakland Athletics last season and is presently at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Rogers and Gonzales are two of three MLB first-round draft picks who are BNL alums along with southpaw Cam Caminiti of Scottsdale Saguaro last year as the 24th pick overall by the Atlanta Braves.

Rogers was the 13th overall pick of the 2017 draft by the Miami Marlins and Gonzales was the seventh overall selection in the 2020 draft by the Pirates.

Huie said that in addition to players from Southern Arizona attending the tryout camp May 17 will be players from Phoenix, El Paso and New Mexico.
