Locals in the Pros

Players with Southern Arizona ties on MLB-sanctioned pro baseball teams totals 46

AllSportsTucson.com will again provide updates this summer on players with local ties in professional baseball, sanctioned by MLB (from major league to rookie league, excluding independent and foreign leagues).

The players tracked include those who graduated from Southern Arizona high schools and former members of either the Pima Community College or Arizona teams.

The total number of players for the 2025 season with local ties is 46.

Scott Kingery and Kevin Newman are now teammates with the Los Angeles Angels after playing together with the Arizona Wildcats from 2013 to 2015

Notes:

— When Scott Kingery’s contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Angels from Triple-A Salt Lake last week that meant he became reunited with former Arizona middle-infield combination partner Kevin Newman for the first time in the pros. Kingery and Newman played together at Arizona under Andy Lopez from 2013 to 2015 and became double-play partners their junior seasons in 2015 with Newman at shortstop and Kingery at second base. Kingery is at second base with the Angels and Newman is at third base. They have yet to play together with the Angels. Kingery started at second base Friday in his first game the team and did not Newman did not play. Newman came off the bench to play third base Saturday and Kingery was not inserted in the lineup. Newman was drafted in the first round in 2015 by the Pittsburgh Pirates (19th pick overall) and Kingery was taken in the second round that year by the Philadelphia Phillies (48th pick).

Jared Oliva and Bobby Dalbec, former Arizona teammates in the 2015 and 2016 seasons, are also reunited at Triple-A Nashville of the Milwaukee Brewers organization this season. They were with the Wildcats when Kingery and Newman were juniors in 2015. Oliva was a freshman and Dalbec a sophomore that season.
