San Simon beat The Gregory School in straight sets on Friday to move to 6-1 in power-ranking matches and 4-0 in the 1A South Region and the Hawks fell to 6-1 and 3-1 in the region. It’s a crowded region at the top with Patagonia (7-0, 2-0) and St. David (3-3, 1-0) also competing for the regular season playoff berth awarded to the region champion. There will also be a spot awarded to the region tournament champion.
The Gregory School built an early 4-0 lead on the Longhorns but the Longhorns gradually built a 15-10 lead only to have the Hawks go on a 7-2 run to tie the set up 17-17. San Simon went back up 24-20 but an ace from Emerson Myers and a kill from Lauren Horowitz helped cut the lead back down to 24-23. The Longhorns closed out the set for a 25-23 win.
In the second set, San Simon built a 20-10 but the Hawks cut the lead down to 22-18 to make things close again. An ace from Ana Fierro and a kill from Bryleigh Sloan closed out another win for San Simon, 25-18.
The Longhorns built a 23-12 lead in the deciding third set but Zena Smith sparked a short run to cut the gap back down to 23-18 but San Simon pulled out a 25-19 win for the sweep.
The Gregory School will host 2A Benson (5-1) on Thursday, Sept, 25 and San Simon will hots ASDB (1-6) on Sept. 30.
The Longhorn Invitational is scheduled to take place on Oct. 18.
