Flowing Wells senior running back Jayden Simmons’ 132 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns in a 42-0 win at Nogales on Friday helped the Caballeros remain unbeaten and also enabled him to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in his three-year varsity career.
Simmons, who did not play at the varsity level as a freshman, is now at 2,114 yards on 280 carries (7.6-yard average) with 39 touchdowns in his 25-game career.
He is averaging 10.5 yards a carry this season, tallying 717 yards on 68 carries with 15 touchdowns. He has run for 100 yards or more 11 times out of 16 games the last two seasons.
His ability to produce on the ground has freed up dual-threat quarterback Benecio Ruiz to be efficient passing the ball (66.7 completion percentage) while also rushing for 248 yards — a key element to Flowing Wells being 6-0 for the first time since 2015.
The Caballeros (2-0 in the 5A Southern) will try to remain undefeated Friday at Mountain View (3-3, 1-1).
For his performance against Nogales last Friday, Simmons is the Week 7 APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Player of the Week.
