Drake Davis’ first varsity season at Mountain View as a sophomore includes six games with more than 100 yards with four of them at least 150 yards.

He ended the regular season Friday with an exclamation mark, rushing for a career-high 252 yards on 28 carries in a 28-0 win at Sunnyside.

Mountain View coach Matt Johnson has stated that Davis (5-foot-9 and 180 pounds) is one of his strongest players in the weight room, and it shows with Davis’ bullish running style breaking many tackles before gaining separation.

That happened numerous times against the Blue Devils in two runs of 38 yards, another for 24, and the highest of 54 yards.

Davis’ running ability gives Mountain View reason of hope as it progresses to the postseason, facing Buena in Sierra Vista in the first round of the 5A state playoffs Friday at 7 p.m. In the last three games against Nogales, Marana and Sunnyside, he rushed 64 times for 447 yards and three touchdowns.

He is at 1,239 yards on 175 carries with 10 touchdowns for the Mountain Lions this season.

For his performance in the win over Sunnyside, Davis is the APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Week 11 Player of the Week.
