Mica Mountain earns second straight trip to 4A state title game after beating Gila Ridge 31-3

No. 7 Mica Mountain overwhelmed No. 6 Yuma Gila Ridge 31-3 to earn its second straight trip to the 4A state championship game on Friday night.

The Thunderbolts (11-2) increased their winning streak to nine games with the victory over the Hawks (11-2) in Yuma.

Mica Mountain will play No. 1 Phoenix Arcadia (13-0) in the championship at 3 p.m. on Friday at Arizona State’s Mountain America Stadium.

The Titans defeated visiting ALA-West Foothills 21-12 in the other semifinal game Friday night.

Jay Campos earned his fifth spot in a championship after taking Sabino to the title game four times when he coached the Sabercats from 2003 to 2016.

Campos, in his first season after replacing Pat Nugent following last year’s 4A state championship, took over a program that graduated 28 seniors following last season.

Defensive coordinator Brett Darling is a mainstay from last year’s team and his defense, led by senior linebacker Broden Schmidt, has suffocated opponents in their nine-game winning streak.

Mica Mountain has outscored opponents 298-37 in the winning streak. The Thunderbolts limited Gila Ridge to a field goal, the eighth time Darling’s defense has allowed a touchdown or less this season.

Riley Carson caught touchdown passes of 91 and 9 yards from Jaidyn Crist and made a 32-yard field goal in the win over the Hawks.

Colin Axford added touchdown runs of 15 and 32 yards.
