The Sunnyside boys wrestling team is going after its 36th team championship at the 59th Annual Flowing Wells Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Flowing Wells High School.
After Friday’s competition, the Blue Devils lead Neosho (Mo.) 168-140 heading into the semifinal round on Saturday. Neosha comes in with nine state championships dating to 2008 and Sunnyside has 38 since 1979, including the last eight in a row.
There are 35 teams (228 girls) on the girls side and 30 teams registered for the boys (305). The field also includes 16 returning state champions still alive in the semifinals.
Chatfield (Colo.) has a slim lead over the Sunnyside girls 90-5-89-5. El Paso Eastwood topped Sunnyside 212.5-212 last year and Chatfield took fourth place.
Weigh-ins begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with the wrestling beginning at 9:30. The finals are tentatively scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
Admission tickets can be purchased online through GoFan. Cash will not be accepted at the door.
