They are in different conferences now, but the rivalry between Salpointe and Canyon del Oro is just as intense.
Salpointe, which remained in 4A while CDO moved to 5A last season, entered Monday’s road game against the Dorados ranked No. 1 in the state in its conference.
CDO is No. 7 among 5A schools.
The Lancers prevailed 7-2 in the only game between the two softball powers this season behind ace Macee Jackson’s 13 strikeouts. Jackson (12-3) scattered nine hits and walked none while allowing two runs (one earned). She has won her last six starts.
Salpointe is now 21-4 overall and on a 12-game winning streak.
CDO (21-6) is on a three-game losing streak after losing to 5A Southern foe Mountain View twice last week. The Dorados won 13 of 14 games before their recent slide.
CDO’s Savanna Mares, one of the state’s top pitchers as a freshman, allowed three hits and four runs over four innings. She struck out seven and walked three and is now 15-5.
Addi Wild went 2 for 4 for Salpointe. She drove in two runs, as did Iza Palomarez and CC Moraga.
Ashlyn Swanson had three of the Lancers’ seven walks in the game.
Soli Ramos, who had two walks and a single, finished with three runs.
Haley Deeb had an RBI single, and Avery Golder and Emma Shaffer each had two hits for the Dorados.
Moraga’s two-run single in the third inning opened the scoring. Wild’s two-run double highlighted a three-run fifth inning that put Salpointe ahead 5-1.
Palomarez’s single with two outs in the top of the sixth resulted in a fielding error in the outfield by CDO, allowing Ramos (who walked to lead off the inning) to score.
After Deeb’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth cut the lead to 6-2, Salpointe tacked on one more insurance run in the seventh when Wild scored on a fielder’s choice.
Wild singled to lead off the inning, Sarah Camp followed with another single and Swanson walked to load the bases. Wild then scored on a fielder’s choice.
Salpointe will next host Nogales on Friday night at 6 in the final regular season game of the season.
CDO will play at Catalina Foothills on Tuesday (6 p.m.) before hosting the Falcons on Thursday (4 p.m.). The Dorados’ last regular-season game is next Monday (4 p.m.) at home against Maricopa.
