Pima keeps playoff hopes alive with run-rule victory over Phoenix

The Pima Community College baseball team remained alive in the ACCAC Division II playoff hunt Tuesday with a 13-1 win in five innings over Phoenix at West Campus Aztec Field.

Pima (26-25, 18-20 ACCAC) is 1 1/2 games behind Glendale (26-21, 19-18) and Chandler-Gilbert (27-25, 19-18) for fourth place in the standings (the top four advance to the postseason) with the Aztecs down to their last two games of the regular season.

Glendale plays at Pima at noon on Wednesday. The Aztecs need a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Chandler-Gilbert travels to first-place South Mountain (38-14, 29-8) for a 3 p.m. game Wednesday.

Pima scored 13 runs in the second inning in its run-rule victory in five innings Tuesday against Phoenix.

Sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro) hit an RBI double to put the Aztecs on the board, scoring sophomore Matt MacDonald.

In his second at-bat of the inning, he hit a grand slam, bringing around freshmen Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills), Damian Lorta (Desert View) and MacDonald to make it 9-0.

Sophomore Jackson Glueck hit a two-run homer to right field, scoring freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito to make it 5-0.

Sophomore Leon Cereceres hit a triple and scored on a passed ball. Sophomore Ramon Martinez hit an RBI double to plate freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic) to make it 10-0. Martinez later scored on a wild pitch. The Aztecs capped off the inning with five straight walks and had nine for the inning.

Jones finished the game 2 for 3 with five RBIs and two runs. Glueck went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a run while Martinez was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Cereceres, Figueroa-Brito and MacDonald each scored two runs.

Freshman Braxton Bjur (2-3) got the win as he pitched all five innings, giving up one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks on 92 pitches.
