
2A SOFTBALL SEMIFINAL
No. 5 Willcox 8, No. 1 Laveen Heritage Academy 4
Willcox has reached the state championship for the first time since 2010, when the Cowgirls won the 2A title, after upsetting top-seeded Heritage Academy on Thursday at Phoenix’s Papago Softball Complex.
Willcox (24-6) outhit Heritage Academy (24-5) by a total of 12-6, led by sophomore Jacqueline Ramirez’s 3-for-4 performance with two doubles and an RBI.
Junior Gloria Encinas, sophomore Janelle Vandermeulen, and sophomore Karlie St. Clair each went 2 for 4. Encinas and St. Clair each had two RBIs and Vandermeulen had two doubles.
Willcox freshman ace Hattie Macumber improved to 24-5 with a 0.69 ERA.
She scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs in her complete-game effort. She achieved her sixth consecutive double-digit strikeout game with 11 to go with only one walk.
Macumber also helped herself at the plate going 1 for 2 with a run and two walks.
NEXT: Willcox is in the state title game for the fifth time. The Cowgirls won their first and only state championship in 2010 when it beat Benson 5-3. They will play play No. 2 Bullhead City Mohave Accelerated (25-4) on Monday at 4 p.m. at Grand Canyon University.
