Accomplished former Sunnyside High School wrestler Alezandra Robles has signed with Iowa State’s new women’s wrestling program, which is set to start competing in the 2027-28 academic year.

Women’s wrestling was added as a program at the Ames, Iowa, school in April, and Robles is part of the Cyclones’ first recruiting class.

She will compete in events in the upcoming season as “unattached” before the program starts competition in 2027-28.

“I’m honored to continue my academic and wrestling career at Iowa State University as part of the first women’s wrestling team in school history,” Robles stated. “Being given the opportunity to help build something from the ground up is truly special. Representing Sunnyside, my family, and my community at the collegiate level is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

Robles is coming off a 37-5 season as senior in which she finished runner-up in the state tournament at 165 points. It was her second consecutive runner-up placement.

She was a three-time sectional champion and placed first at 170 pounds in the prestigious Queen of the Hill tournament in Corona, Calif., during her junior year.

She comes from a highly successful wrestling family.

Her brothers Rico and Sebastian Robles each won state titles at Sunnyside and went on to wrestle in college. Rico was a 2019 state champion who went on to wrestle at Arizona Christian, and Sebastian was a two-time state champion at Sunnyside (2020 and 2021) who wrestled for Iowa.

“I want to thank my mom, my dad, my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who believed in me and pushed me to become the person and athlete I am today,” Alezandra mentioned. “None of this would have been possible without their support, sacrifices, and encouragement through every challenge along the way.”

Alezandra also earned titles in the Peoria Tournament of Champions, Flowing Wells Invitation and William Bell Tournament during her four-year varsity career at Sunnyside.

She maintained a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) throughout her time at Sunnyside.

“Ever since I started wrestling, I dreamed of competing at the next level; today, I’m proud to say that dream is becoming a reality,” she stated. “The lessons, memories, and relationships I’ve gained throughout this journey have shaped who I am, and I’ll carry them with me into this next chapter.

“I’m excited for what’s ahead and ready to work harder than ever. This is only the beginning.”
