Cactus Empire forced a deciding game for the District 12 Little League baseball championship with the victory over San Xavier.
Cactus Empire has won four straight elimination games after starting the tournament with a 4-3 loss against San Xavier.
Gabriel Rodriguez hit a couple of two-run home runs as part of Cactus Empire’s four-home run barrage on Monday night that included three home runs in a six-run fourth inning that opened the scoring. Leon Verdugo and Ryan Kruse also hit home runs that inning.
Rodriguez belted his second two-run shot and Kruse hit a two-run double in a four-run sixth that increased the lead to 10-0.
Verdugo, who reached the pitch count limit of 75 through five innings, was the winning pitcher after not allowing a run with four hits. He struck out eight and walked three.
San Xavier’s Diego Lopez hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and Royce Otero then walked but the last batter struck out to end the game.
