
The Show Baseball Sluggers, comprised mostly of many local standouts in community college, captured their second consecutive Sun Belt College League championship by winning both games of a best-of-three series with the Old Pueblo Kings on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Show, who finished 18-5, defeated the Kings 3-1 on Tuesday and 6-0 on Wednesday to take home the trophy once again.
Dane Heppner, a left fielder from Lamar (Colo.) Community College, was chosen the MVP. Heppner went 3 for 4 with two runs in Wednesday’s final game.
Matthew Greiner, a Tanque Verde High School alum who attends William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., was the winning pitcher allowing only three hits in five innings. He had eight strikeouts and one walk.
Clean-up hitter Javier Arvizu of Pima Community College went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Arvizu, a Pueblo High School grad, batted a team-best .526 in 21 games and 38 at-bats with four doubles and 18 RBIs. His OPS was 1.357.
In Tuesday’s win, Salpointe grad Aciel Guillen (Pima), Sabino alum Adam Federico Jr. (Lamar) and Empire grad Ian Lemus (New Mexico) combined to limit the Kings (11-12) to one run.
Guillen scattered seven hits in three innings and struck out three without a walk. Federico did not allow a hit in his 2 2/3 innings of relief and had four strikeouts and one walk. Lemus earned the save pitching a hitless 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout and no walks.
Connor Ellis, a Marana alum who attends Lamar, had a two-run single to boost the Show to victory.
