CDO alum Francisco Rivero signs with Washington Nationals

Canyon del Oro alum Francisco Rivero’s lifelong ambition of playing in the major leagues took a significant step Sunday with his signing with the Washington Nationals.

Rivero, a catcher who signed with Arizona last November, was selected in the 15th round last week by the Nationals in the MLB draft.

Generally, a pick in that spot signs for around $150,000, but could be more depending on what the MLB team has for an above-slot allowance.

Rivero batted .463 with six home runs, nine doubles and 34 RBIs this spring for the Dorados. He attended an MLB International Draft Academy in Venezuela before attending CDO the last two years.

He signed with the Nationals at West Palm Beach, Fla., where he will stay to prepare for the upcoming rookie league.
