By a vote of 7-0, the Tucson City Council approved a measure to name the new softball complex located at Kennedy Park after former Cholla and University of Arizona softball standout Stacy Redondo. The measure, presented Wednesday night in front of family members, including her parents Rene and Alice, was widely supported by the local community and the complex will be named “Stacy Redondo Fields.”
Stacy passed away at the age of 52 in 2023 and she lives on through her children Chad, Justin and Kali. Stacy was part of Mike Candrea’s first two national championships (1991 and 1993) and she graduated from Arizona with a degree in Spanish literature in 1993, while also earning a master’s in early childhood development from NAU.
Stacy taught at Hollinger, Lynn-Urquides, C.E. Rose, Drachman Montessori Magnet School Roskruge Bi-lingual Magnet School.
I spoke on Stacy’s behalf on her legacy and contributions to our community and her cousin Rene Lopez spoke on her background, character and everyone’s love for Stacy.
“I’ve been to the main complex, and it’s such a beautiful space, and there are new generations of young girls looking up to Stacy and you know she was not just a softball player,” Mayor Regina Romero said before the vote on the measure.
“She was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, cousin, friend. She is remembered for her smile and personality that could light up any room. Stacy proudly embraced her Hispanic heritage and served as a coach, and a teacher, and she influenced so many, so many young kids in this city. So, as a person that was there on the council when we passed funds for parks, this is exactly what we imagined – that the community would embrace these new spaces, and that we would name them because naming them is so important for the kids that play in those fields today. So thank you so much for bringing it Vice Mayor (Lane Santa Cruz), for presenting it to us, and I appreciate it finally being here.”
