Salpointe over Cienega 3-0

Salpointe beat Cienega 3-0 at home Wednesday night to move to 2-0 on the year and Bobcats are now even at 1-1. The Lancers took the first set 25-11 but the team battled back from a 10-4 deficit in the second set to win it 25-21 and the team had to fight back again in the third set after the Bobcats went up 17-8. Salpointe went on a 17-4 run down the stretch for the 25-23 victory with junior Kali Schulte providing the final kill.

Schulte is the daughter of former University of Arizona softball standout Stacy Redondo, who passed away in April. Alexia Hutchens led the Lancers with six kills and Kiki Muehlebach had five. Sophia Hernandez had 12 assists and Chloe Zhang had 10.

Cienega is led by head coach KC Bennett, who played at Rincon/University before earning honors playing for Louisiana Tech. Bennet has coaching experience at Rincon, Sahuarita, Oregon State and Seattle. The Bobcats are led by senior Regan McFarland, junior Kaylie Willis and senior Kamila Velasco.

Salpointe head coach Heather Moore-Martin is now 12 victories away from 700 career victories combined from boys (214) and girls (474).

Salpointe will visit Canyon del Oro (0-1) on Thursday and Cienega will host Sunnyside (0-0) on Sept. 6.
