Jet Sports Training Week 10 Pigskin Report: Five games on tap Thursday including Sahuaro-Mica Mountain

SOUTHERN ARIZONA TACKLE FOOTBALL WEEK 10 SCHEDULE

Kickoffs at 7 p.m.

THURSDAY

3A EAST

No. 19 Sabino (3-6, 1-3) at No. 21 Safford (4-5, 1-4) .

This game most likely is for pride with the teams outside of the top 16 that qualify for the 3A state tournament. One of the most versatile athletes in Southern Arizona, Anthony Dimas, (normally a receiver and defensive back) played quarterback for Sabino in last week’s 37-13 loss against visiting Thatcher. He passed for 147 yards and rushed for 111.

4A KINO

No. 17 Sahuaro (5-4. 3-1) at No. 2 Mica Mountain (8-1, 3-1)

Sahuaro has won four of its last five games with its lone loss in that span a 24-19 battle with region champ Walden Grove at home. The Cougars will advance to the postseason in consecutive years under coach Al Alexander (the first time that’s happened since 2018 and 2019). … Mica Mountain is 3-0 in its series with Sahuaro, outscoring the Cougars 126-20, including 71-0 the last two seasons. … Both teams have a capable passing game but this game will be won on the ground. Sahuaro boasts RB Anakin Alexander (828 rushing yards) and Mica Mountain has RB Jeremiah Anderson (734 yards). … Sahuaro SS Jayvion Gilbert-Rojas (63 tackles/three interceptions) and Mica Mountain DE Jack Andrews (14 sacks) are two of the top defenders in the state.

4A GILA

No. 19 Sahuarita (7-2, 4-0) at No. 41 Cholla (5-4, 2-2)

Cholla all the way down at No. 41 after its upset loss at Rio Rico last week may adversely affect Sahuarita’s power ratings after this one. The Mustangs are ranked five spots above the playoff cutoff (No. 24), so they are in decent shape for the postseason. A victory is needed to strengthen Sahuarita’s bid to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014. … Sahuarita QB Dane Hartnett is one of the top dual-threat players at his position with 1,308 passing yards and 441 rushing yards. … Cholla is playing for its first winning season since 2015.

No. 25 Pueblo (6-3, 3-1) at No. 57 Empire (0-9, 0-4)

The Warriors are on the outside looking in for the playoffs, one spot out of the top 24, with one regular season game remaining. Playing No. 57 Empire will not benefit Pueblo, which can still end its season on a positive note with consecutive seven-win seasons. Because of the Warriors’ recent success under alum Sly Lewis, they could be elevated to a more competitive 4A region next year — thereby helping their power ratings — when realignment takes place after this season.

No. 40 Rio Rico (3-6, 2-2) at No. 55 Rincon/University (1-8, 1-3)

Rio Rico can finish with a winning region record and win three of its last four games with a victory. The experience can serve as a springboard heading into the offseason and for next year under coach Dominik Bonilla. … Rincon/University won its first game under interim head coach Dan Williams last week, 20-6 at Empire.
