Add another former Arizona football player to the list of those affiliated with an NFL team.
Former UA defensive end D’Aundre Reed was signed by San Francisco today to its practice. Reed must have impressed San Francisco’s coaching staff and scouts in an early-morning workout. They signed him immediately afterward.
Reed was originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round (215th overall) of the 2011 NFL draft. He has appeared in six career games, primarily on special teams.
He was released by the Vikings on Sept. 9. Reed played in 47 games at the UA from 2007-10, registering 83 tackles and six sacks.
The 49ers had an available roster spot after placing Aldon Smith on the Reserve/NFI list Monday. That was filled by cornerback Darryl Morris, who was elevated from the practice squad. The domino effect reached Reed, who at 6-4 and 260 pounds can also play outside linebacker in San Francisco’s 4-3 defense.
— The national media, including NBC sideline reporter Michelle Tafoya, made a big deal about Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler lowering the boom on Pittsburgh safety Robert Golden, a former UA cornerback, in Sunday night’s game. Cutler scrambled for a first down and braced himself with Golden pursuing.
Golden stopped him but in the process lost his footing and appeared to get the better end of the hit. The important thing about Golden is that he showed effort and made the play against Cutler.
— Two former UA players — Antoine Cason of the Cardinals and Juron Criner of the Raiders — have experienced little or no playing time to date for their respective teams.
Cason, a five-year veteran who started his career with San Diego, has played mostly on special teams. Criner has yet to be activated in a game for Oakland but he remains active on the Raiders’ 53-man roster.
— The ageless Lance Briggs, an 11-year pro, continues to amaze with Chicago. He registered a sack and recovered fumble against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Briggs stripped Ben Roethlisberger in the fourth quarter and Julius Peppers caught the ball and returned it for a touchdown that put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.
