Jay Campos, who has spent the last 20 years at Sabino High School as a teacher, football coach and athletic director, will be leaving to become the principal of interscholastics at new high school Mica Mountain.
Campos was approved for the position by the Vail School District tonight. Mica Mountain, located at near the intersection of Houghton and Valencia, opens its doors for its first school year this fall. The Thunderbolts will compete in the 4A Gila with Amphi, Douglas, Walden Grove, Rio Rico and Sahuarita.
Former Cienega football coach Nemer Hassey will be the principal at Mica Mountain. Whitney Holland will be the athletic director.
As Sabino’s football coach, Campos led the Sabercats to four state championship games. His record in 14 years as Sabino’s coach was 133-35.
“I am very honored to be named assistant principal at Mica Mountain,” Campos said. “We look forward to opening for the 2020-2021 school year as a comprehensive high school that excels in academics, athletics and fine arts.
“While I will always value the time I spent at Sabino and will appreciate the great students, colleagues and parents that I had a chance to work with, I am looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my career in the Vail School District.”
After graduating from Sinagua High School in Flagstaff in 1994, Campos, 43, earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and teaching at Arizona and a master’s degree in educational leadership and management at NAU.
