Southern Arizona Volunteers coach Marty Roth has confirmed that Daryl Jones, who was selected the AZPreps365 6A Metro Region Coach of the Year last season at Tucson High School, has joined the organization’s coaching staff.
Jones was hired at Sabino in March after Tucson let him go after his lone season with the Badgers. His decision means the Sabercats will hire another boys basketball head coach.
Roth said Jones is one of at least three local high school coaches who expressed interest of joining the Volunteers’ staff, which includes Roth and Marvin Beckwith — both of whom coached Sabino to the Class 3A state title game last season.
“With COVID-19 going on and not sure what the AIA is going to do, and being with Marty and Marvin, who are great guys — Marty has a Christian background similar to me — it seems like it could be the best thing for me,” Jones said recently about joining the Volunteers’ staff. “This is something (prep organization) I have wanted to get involved with as a coach.”
Two of Jones’ Tucson High players from last season — senior guards Kaden Luna and Yahir Garcia — began tryouts with the Volunteers today.
The prep organization, unaffiliated with the Arizona Interscholastic Association, is the first of its kind in Tucson. Local players in grades 9-12 this season can play for the organization while attending their high school.
Roth mentioned that he anticipates an elite team and two junior elite teams this season.
