5A

FIRST ROUND

No. 2 Salpointe 63, No. 15 Phoenix Sunnyslope 34

— No. 2 Salpointe (9-2) advanced to the 5A state quarterfinals Friday, when the Lancers will host No. 7 Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep (8-3) at 7 p.m. The Saints have traveled to Tucson before this season, on Oct. 1, to face Marana Mountain View and they won that game 42-9. Salpointe and Notre Dame Prep have played each other twice before, both times in the playoffs, with the Lancers losing 33-14 in the opening round in 2011 and beating the Saints 45-9 in the first round a year later.

— PK Owen Lynch tied a school record for 9 PATs.

— QB Treyson Bourguet, a senior, completed 13 of 19 passes for 193 yards with three TDs and no interceptions, and he rushed for 34 yards on eight carries.

— RB Anthony Wilhite, a senior, gained 207 yards on 21 carries with three TDs.

— RB Dailan Goodman, a junior, had 63 yards on 12 rushes.

— WR Gage Felix, a junior, had three receptions for 80 yards and a TD.

— WR Dylan Dreis, a senior, had five catches for 45 yards and a TD.

— WR Michael Aguirre, a senior, tallied 62 yards on four catches with a TD.

— CB Jaxson Greene, a junior, returned an interception 63 yards for a TD.

— LB Conner Raetzman, a junior, returned a fumble for a TD.

No. 6 Desert View 26, No. 11 Goodyear Millennium 13

— No. 6 Desert View (10-1) set a school record with its 10th win in a season. The Jaguars will travel to No. 3 Goodyear Desert Edge (9-2) on Friday for a 5A quarterfinal game. If Robert Bonillas’ team pulls off the upset, it will reach the semifinal round in the state playoffs for the first time in school history.

— RB Serge Gboweiah, a senior, had 283 yards rushing on 28 carries with three TDs.

— QB Oscar Barraza, a senior, completed 7 of 13 passes for 88 yards and a TD.

— RB Abdulahi Yusuf, a senior, rushed five times for 45 yards.

No. 9 Cienega 47, No. 8 Buckeye Verrado 36

— Cienega (8-3) continued its first-round success in the state playoffs under new coach Justin Argraves, who is in his 12th season overall after one year at Mountain View and 10 at Tucson High. The Bobcats are now 13-3 in first round games dating to their first postseason appearance in 2003. … Argraves achieved his first playoff victory after going 0-4 with the Badgers. … Cienega next plays at No. 1 Scottsdale Horizon (9-2) on Friday in the 5A quarterfinals. The Huskies are coached by former Arizona football player and Marana coach Andy Litten, who knows what it’s like to coach against Cienega in meaningful games. In 2017, with Jamarye Joiner a senior at Cienega and Trenton Bourguet a junior at Marana under Litten, Cienega beat the Tigers 57-50 in the season opener and 38-35 in the quarterfinals of the 5A state playoffs.

— QB Brayden Cherry, a junior,13 of 20 pass attempts for 175 yards against Verrado.

—  Cherry connected with WR Jimmy Diaz for a 38-yard touchdown pass and WR Keron Watson for a 10-yard score.

— RB Cole McFarland, a senior, scored on a 3-yard TD run. 

— RB Ritchie McCormack, a senior, scored on two TD runs including a 5-yard score.

— The Bobcats had 185 yards rushing.

No. 4 Scottsdale Desert Mountain 17, No. 13 Ironwood Ridge 7

— Ironwood Ridge’s strong finish to the season included taking No. 4 Desert Mountain the distance before coming up short. The Nighthawks (6-5) won four games in a row entering the playoffs averaging 56.3 points in those games but they couldn’t sustain offense against Desert Mountain (11-1).

— The game was tied at 7 at halftime before Desert Mountain pulled away with the 10-point win.

4A

FIRST ROUND

No. 12 Canyon del Oro 35, at No. 5 Lake Havasu 21

SATURDAY

— No. 12 Canyon del Oro (7-4) has won seven of its last eight games after an 0-3 start by taking care business on the road against No. 5 Lake Havasu. The Dorados took the 305-mile bus trip to Lake Havasu on Thursday night which proved to be vital to keep them as prepared as possible on gameday waking up there. They next play at No. 4 Glendale (10-1) on Friday in a 4A state quarterfinal game. CDO coach Dustin Peace, in his 12th season as head coach, improved his playoff record to 10-7. He coached the Dorados to the 2009 state title. CDO won its first playoff game since 2014 when the Dorados beat Verrado in the first round. The Dorados lost four straight playoff games after that win until Friday’s win over Lake Havasu.

— QB Caden Dawes, a junior, completed 6 of 14 passes for 86 yards with a TD.

— RB Kayden Luke, a sophomore, gained 193 yards on 26 carries with three TDs.

— RB Kendric Astacio, a junior, had seven carries for 56 yards.

— RB Jose Alba, a sophomore, finished with 48 yards on seven carries.

2A

SEMIFINALS

No. 2 Arizona Lutheran Academy 20, No. 3 Benson 7

— Benson finished its season 9-3 with a 2A San Pedro region championship. A state title continued to elude 18-year coach Chris Determan, who has reached at least the semifinal round five times including this season. The Bobcats made it to the state champion game last season and in 2016.

— LB Brok Determan, a senior, had an interception

— CB Angel Rigney, a junior, had an interception.

— RB Devin Bowling, a senior, had an 8-yard TD run.
