MOUNTAIN VIEW MOUNTAIN LIONS
2021 RECORD: 4-6
- Matt Johnson will be in his fourth season at Mountain View and a constant remains in his tenure — playing a non-region schedule that includes at least two teams from the Phoenix area. This season, Mountain View plays at Gilbert Higley on Sept. 9, a week after the Mountain Lions open the season in the Battle of the Boot rivalry game against visiting Marana. After a bye week following the Higley game, Johnson’s team hosts Mesa Red Mountain.
- Higley is now a 5A team that won a successful appeal to move down a classification from 6A. The program struggled to with a 2-8 record last season, but in recent years, it has been dominant. The Knights went 39-12 from 2016 to 2020. Red Mountain, of the 6A East Valley that now includes Salpointe, went 11-3 and advanced to the state semfinals last fall.
- Last season, Mountain View played at Goodyear Millennium and hosted Phoenix Notre Dame Prep, and in 2019, the Mountain Lions played at Higley and Queen Creek Casteel.
- Mountain View also plays at Nogales and hosts Walden Grove in non-region play before playing at Tucson (Oct. 14) and Buena (Oct. 21) to begin the 5A Southern schedule. The last three region games are against state-playoff programs last year — Ironwood Ridge (Oct. 28) and Cienega (Nov. 4) at home and against Desert View (Nov. 11) on the road.
