Nogales improved to 7-0 in power-ranking games after beating Ironwood Ridge 58-46 Tuesday night on the road. The Apaches came in ranked No. 3 in the 5A Conference and Ironwood Ridge (7-3) was No. 9. Nogales is also ranked No. 8 in the new Open Division system and the Nighthawks are No. 29. The AIA rankings are updated every week from Tuesday to Friday at noon….

Nogales head coach Yahaira Sanchez was a standout for the Apaches before moving over to play for Pima College under former University of Arizona standout Greta Naranjo. Sanchez was an All-Star selection in the era of Sybil Dosty (Salpointe) and Catherria Turner (Amphitheater).
Ironwood Ridge head coach Daron Cross was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame this past year as part of the staff of the Sahuaro 1998 girls basketball team that went 30-1 with a state championship under Jim Scott. He went on to be the first boys basketball coach at Cienega before moving over to Flowing Wells and Tucson High.

Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and a 2019 AZ Education News recognition. He was a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling and his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is a Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee.
