2023 football: 50 top Southern Arizona seniors — Sunnyside RB/slot receiver Samario Garcia

Today marks only 35 days until the kickoff of the 2023 Southern Arizona high school football season with games scheduled Aug. 18. AllSportsTucson.com is listing 50 of the top seniors in Southern Arizona during this stretch. This is not a ranking. This is a list in alphabetical order. We acknowledge more than 50 quality seniors will play on high school fields locally this fall and we will report on them accordingly.

Samario Garcia, 5-foot-9 and 143 pounds, is listed as a running back at Sunnyside but he has proven in his first three varsity seasons to be more of a receiving threat either out of the backfield or as a slot receiver. … He amassed 585 receiving yards last year on 32 catches with six touchdowns. In his three varsity seasons, he has 799 yards receiving on 48 receptions with eight touchdowns. He has rushed for 154 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. … He started to play more at cornerback last season and figures to get more opportunities there this season. … Garcia was part of the TYFSF 14U team in 2019 that played in the national championship game at Orlando, Fla. … He carries a 4.0 GPA.

Sunnyside coach Thomas Romack on Garcia: “We expect Samario to step up as a leader and to continue to be a superstar for us on offense. He has always taken a lead-by-example approach. We want to see him be more vocal. He’s been working on defense and is excelling at corner. He’s a kid who has worked his tail off to never be off the field and his playmaking ability makes it so he needs to be on the field at all times.”
