Behind eight innings of stellar relief pitching by Adrien Marquez, the No. 4-seeded Speedway Gamblers in regular season upset No. 1 Old Tucson Gauchos by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday night in the opening game of the best-of-three Sun Belt College League championship series.
Marquez, a CDO graduate who is bound for Eastern Arizona College, struck out six and allowed four hits.
Two other Eastern Arizona players — Mauro Acuna of Salpointe and Devin Alvarez of Sahuarita — and Buena graduate Austin Monge of Simpson College each drove in a run for the Gamblers.
Joel Lindahl of Cochise College had two hits including a double for the Gauchos.
Game 2 of the championship series continues Wednesday night 6:30 at Kino Annex Field 5.
The Gamblers can wrap up the title, or a Gauchos win extends the series to a deciding third game on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
