Sabino junior Chase Pickering shot a 5-under-par 31 on the front nine of Randolph North on Wednesday. Pickering picked up shots on the first, second and fifth hole to go along with an eagle on the ninth hole. Ironwood Ridge senior Jayden Schmitz also played a great round with a 3-under 33 and Salpointe junior Joey Bernier and Ironwood Ridge senior Brasen Briones came in one shot under to tie for third place.
Briones, the 2021 state champion, is committed to play for Pacific where the 2022 state champion Carlos Astiazaran is an incoming freshman and former Cienega and Pima All-American Daniel Henely is a junior college transfer.
As a team, Ironwood Ridge won the Division II state championship last fall under head coach Ryan Bias. Bias also picked up a state title in 2008 to go along with four team titles he won coaching boys tennis with the Nighthawks (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013).
Ironwood Ridge (142) won the team portion on Wednesday over Salpointe (152) and Sabino (154). Canyon del Oro’s scores were not complete as of Wednesday night.

Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and a 2019 AZ Education News recognition.
