The Pima Community College baseball team stepped away from ACCAC play to host a doubleheader against Scottsdale Post Grad on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Field and the Aztecs were victorious in both games.
Freshman Nolan Ganter finished the day going 7 for 8 with eight RBIs, five runs, four doubles and one triple. Sophomore Dom Felix (Canyon del Oro) was 2 for 6 with three RBIs and four runs. Sophomore Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro) went 4 for 9 with six runs and an RBI. Sophomore Diego Alvarez (Sahuarita) and freshman Seth Lee picked up the wins on the mound.
Game 1: (16) Pima 21, Scottsdale Post Grad 4 (5 innings)
The Aztecs established their dominance at the plate as they scored 12 runs in the first inning before recording an out.
Sophomore Benji Cazares (Tucson) cleared the bases with a three-run RBI double bringing around Ganter, Felix and freshman Andrew Hall to make it 6-0.
Ganter capped off the inning with a three-run RBI triple scoring freshman Caden Richards, Madsen and sophomore David Shackelford. The Aztecs had two RBI singles, two RBI doubles and two RBI triples in the inning.
Ganter and Felix had back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning. The Aztecs scored another six runs in the fourth inning. Cazares had a two-run RBI double to bring in Ganter and Felix. Freshman Kai Fitak made it 21-2 as he drove in Cazares and freshman Ray Jessee with his RBI double.
Ganter finished the game going 4 for 4 with six RBIs and three runs as he fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle. He had two doubles, a triple and a single.
Cazares went 2 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs while Felix was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs. Shackelford closed it out going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Madsen finished 3 for 4 with an RBI and four runs scored. Richards was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and Jesse finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, two runs and two walks.
The Aztecs used five pitchers in the game as they all threw one inning. Alvarez picked up the win after he threw the first inning, finishing with two strikeouts.
Game 2: (16) Pima 11, Scottsdale Post Grad 10
The Aztecs were forced to rally from behind four times and won the game in the seventh inning on a wild pitch.
With the score tied at 10 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ganter hit a leadoff double.
He moved over to third base after freshman Collin Senior’s groundout. Shackelford was intentionally walked, and freshman Chase Cummings loaded the bases after he reached base on an infield hit. Ganter scored on a wild pitch to end the game.
With Pinma down 2-0 in the first inning, Hall drew a bases-loaded walk and Cazares and Jesse were hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats as Pima took a 3-2 lead.
The Roadrunners scored three runs to retake the lead in the second inning but the Aztecs countered with three runs of their own in the inning. Ganter hit a sacrifice-fly RBI, Madsen scored on an error and sophomore Antonio Avila stole home plate to give Pima a 6-5 lead.
The Aztecs trailed 8-6 in the fourth inning but tied it with Ganter’s RBI double and Hall’s RBI single.
The Roadrunners took the lead one more time with a run in the fifth inning but the Aztecs tied it in the bottom-half of the inning when Felix drew a bases loaded walk.
Sophomore Ruben Castro (Tucson) hit an RBI single to give Pima a 10-9 lead but Scottsdale Post Grad tied it in the top of the seventh.
Ganter finished the game 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. Hall was 1 for 2 with two RBIs while Avila went 2 for 3 with two runs. Madsen was 1 for 5 with two runs. Castro finished 1 for 1 with an RBI, a run and a walk.
Lee pitched the the last two innings as he picked up the win, giving up one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
The Aztecs get back to ACCAC play on Saturday when they hit the road against Cochise College in Douglas. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
