Carlo Rivero, an infielder and right-handed pitcher from Tucson, is one of 24 players who advanced to the 2024 12U USA national team extended training camp roster after the initial training camp took place at Cary, N.C., during the week.
A total of 36 players competed in five days of intrasquad games, performance assessments and on-field workouts. The roster was split into two teams for a four-game Stars vs. Stripes series, allowing the USA coaching staff to evaluate players in competitive gameplay.
The 24 players selected to the extended training camp will compete for the final 18 roster spots for the team that will play in the 12U Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier from Sept. 20-29 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Dates are not set yet for the extended training camp. USA Baseball states at its website that the 24 players chosen to take part in the extended training camp will “reconvene prior to the World Cup Qualifier.”
Rivero is a standout who is also playing for the Sunnyside Little League team that is playing in the District 12 tournament at Manzanita Park.
Rivero is the younger brother of former Sunnyside Little League standout Francisco Rivero, who was a member of the 2019 team that came a game away from reaching the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pa.
Francisco has trained in the Dominican Republic since playing for Sunnyside that year. A catcher, he impressed Dodgers scouts at a showcase event in Venezuela last year. He potentially can sign with the Dodgers as an international prospect when he becomes 16.
Their father Francisco Sr. was the manager of the Sunnyside Little League team in 2019. He hails from Venezuela and was a farmhand in the Milwaukee Brewers organization as a right-handed pitcher.
