No. 2 Pima 28-0 after routing Glendale, Gonzales approaching 1,000 career points

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team improved to 28-0 overall and 16-0 in the ACCAC following its 91-67 win at Glendale on Wednesday night.

Glendale (16-9, 8-7) and Pima are potential Region I, Division II playoff opponents. They came into the game as the top two in the ACCAC Division II standings.

The Aztecs beat the Gauchos in their first meeting 86-80 on Dec. 7 in Glendale and again 91-68 at the Aztecs Gym on Jan. 25.

Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales scored eight straight down the stretch in the second half of Wednesday’s game and finished with 11 points. He is at 992 career points at Pima. He also had five assists and four rebounds in the game.

Pima built a 37-20 lead in the first half, but the Gauchos scored five straight field goals all beyond the arc and closed the half on a 15-6 run to cut the Pima to 43-35 at the break.

The Aztecs’ lead was cut to single digits again at 51-42 before they put together an 18-2 run in 4:23 to gain their biggest advantage at that point, 69-44.

Glendale scored the next eight points to make it 69-52 but would not get any closer. The Aztecs led by as many as 29 points after Gonzales’ 3-pointer put the score at 87-58 with under four minutes left.

Sophomores Max Majerle and Wes Ball (Marana) each scored a team-high 21 points. Majerle was 8 for 14 from the field with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ball was 5 for 6 shooting and 10 for 11 from the free throw line. He had five rebounds and two steals.

Sophomore Gabe Oldham fell short of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds as he added five assists. He went 4 for 7 from the floor.

Sophomore Kota Benson (formerly of Baboquivari who completed his career at Mesa) contributed with nine points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday when they play at Mesa. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.

NOTES: Pima coach Brian Peabody is now at 704-255 in his 32-year head coaching career. … Pima continues to lead the nation at the NJCAA Division II level in victories, scoring (104.1 points a game), rebounding margin (27.1), assists per game (24.1) and opponent assists per game (7.5).
